I think these are a great little product to have tucked away in the side pocket of your gym bag. (NB: Don’t put them in the main compartment, because if they split you’ll know about it!)

We all have those days when we’re not quite firing on all cylinders. Perhaps you’ve had a long day at work, you’re feeling a little flat, or you simply need something to help get you going before a demanding training session.

That’s where I see these being particularly useful.

They’re small, take up virtually no room, don’t require a shaker or water, and they’re always there when you need one. You don’t have to carry a tub of pre-workout around or worry about measuring out powder.

The formula itself is decent, with caffeine, citrulline malate, creatine and beta-alanine all included. The caffeine is likely to provide the most noticeable immediate benefit, particularly in terms of alertness, focus and training performance.

One thing I would stress, though, is that creatine and beta-alanine are ingredients that generally work best through consistent daily supplementation rather than occasional use. So I wouldn’t expect one gel every now and again to deliver all the benefits associated with those ingredients.

And of course, we need to be sensible with the caffeine.

At 200mg per sachet, this isn’t an insignificant amount. If you’re training later in the afternoon or evening, I’d think carefully before using one, particularly if you’re someone whose sleep is easily disrupted.

There’s little point getting a slightly better workout today if it comes at the expense of a poor night’s sleep and compromised recovery tomorrow.

For me, these aren’t necessarily something I’d encourage people to rely on before every workout. They’re simply a handy option to have available for those occasions when you feel you could benefit from a little extra help.

Small, convenient and always ready when you need one.

The Science:
Effects of caffeine on resistance exercise: A review of recent research

Study: This peer-reviewed review examined the effects of caffeine supplementation on resistance training performance, including muscular strength, endurance, movement velocity and power.

Sports Medicine, 2021

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34291426/

The review found evidence that caffeine can improve several aspects of resistance exercise performance, including strength, muscular endurance, power and movement velocity. This is directly relevant to ABE Pre-Workout Gel because each sachet provides 200mg of caffeine, potentially supporting performance during demanding training sessions.

Citrulline malate enhances athletic anaerobic performance and relieves muscle soreness

Study: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effects of 8g of citrulline malate on resistance exercise performance and muscle soreness in 41 men performing demanding bench press sessions.

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2010

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20386132/

Citrulline malate supplementation increased the number of repetitions participants could perform during repeated sets of bench presses and reduced reported muscle soreness at 24 and 48 hours after exercise.

These findings suggest that citrulline malate may help support muscular endurance during demanding resistance training sessions, making it a relevant ingredient in pre-workout formulations such as ABE Gel.
