This is one of those products that serves a very specific purpose, and when used correctly, I think it can be genuinely useful.

Let’s be honest, nobody buys a zero-calorie syrup because it’s packed with vitamins, minerals or superfoods. People buy it because they’re trying to make a calorie-controlled diet more enjoyable.

One of the biggest reasons diets fail isn’t hunger, it’s boredom. Eating the same foods day after day can become repetitive, and that’s often when people start looking elsewhere for something more exciting. Products like this can help solve that problem.

What I like about the Per4m syrups is that they allow you to add flavour to foods like oats, yoghurt, pancakes and protein-based desserts without adding hundreds of extra calories from traditional syrups, chocolate spreads or honey.

Now, let’s keep it balanced.

This isn’t a health food. It’s essentially a flavoured syrup using sweeteners and additives to create sweetness without calories. That’s exactly what it’s designed to do.

Would I rather see somebody getting the majority of their nutrition from whole foods? Absolutely.

Would I rather see somebody use a small amount of a zero-calorie syrup to help them stay consistent with a calorie-controlled diet than abandon the diet altogether? Also absolutely.

For me, this is a tool. Not a necessity, just a useful tool that can make adherence easier. And in the real world, adherence is often the difference between success and failure.

The authors concluded that replacing sugar with low-calorie sweeteners can reduce overall energy intake and support modest reductions in body weight when used as part of a calorie-controlled diet.

Study: This meta-analysis evaluated the effects of low-calorie sweeteners on body weight, body composition and weight management outcomes.

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2014
