Ashwagandha is one of those supplements that can be useful when life is coming at you from all angles. Stress, poor sleep, hard training, work pressure, family life… it all adds up. And for a lot of people, they’re constantly ‘on’ with no real off switch.
Who it’s for:
People under consistent stress
Those struggling to switch off
Anyone whose sleep or recovery is taking a hit
Gym users and athletes looking to support recovery
What it does:
Helps support stress resilience
May reduce feelings of anxiety and overwhelm
Can support better sleep and recovery
Helps take the edge off a constantly ‘wired’ system
How I’d use it:
I’d use it daily, not here and there.
Consistency is key with something like this. If stress and recovery are the goals, it needs to be part of your routine.
Personally, I recommend taking it in the evening for most people, especially if switching off and sleep is an issue. But some people take it earlier in the day and still get benefits.
Just don’t expect miracles if lifestyle is a mess, this supports the basics, it doesn’t replace them.
The Science:
A prospective, randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of Ashwagandha Root Extract in reducing stress and anxiety in adults
Study: Adults with chronic stress were supplemented with ashwagandha root extract or placebo over 60 days, assessing stress, anxiety and cortisol levels.
Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 2012
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23439798/
The ashwagandha group showed significant reductions in stress and cortisol compared to placebo, supporting its role in improving stress resilience and overall wellbeing.
Examining the effect of Withania Somnifera supplementation on muscle strength and recovery: A randomised controlled trial
Study: Resistance-trained males were given ashwagandha or placebo over 8 weeks, with measures including strength, muscle size and recovery.
Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2015

Supplementation led to greater improvements in strength and muscle size, alongside enhanced recovery markers, suggesting a beneficial effect for those training regularly.
