A bit of background first…
Towards the tail end of 2023, I made it my mission to scour the plant-based market to find a great value, easy-to-digest protein powder that tasted decent – and I’ll be honest I was extremely disappointed.
I found the majority of them gritty and foul-tasting, and most of the time I’d struggle to finish them – then I came across this Per4M offering.
Whilst they don’t set the world alight, they are definitely much MUCH better than the rest… the vanilla one especially is really tasty when served chilled. They are really easy to mix, and from a digestion standpoint they cause no issues at all with the gut. No bloating, no gas, no distention. Nice n’ smooth.
If you’re on the hunt for a plant-based protein that doesn’t skimp on taste or quality, Per4M Vegan Plant-Based Protein is a solid choice.
Each scoop packs 21g of protein from a blend of pea and rice isolates, which are both easily digestible and provide a complete amino acid profile. The addition of MCT oil powder offers a quick source of energy, making it great for those busy mornings or post-workout refuels.
Who it’s for:
Perfect for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone looking to add a clean, plant-based protein to their diet.
What it does:
Supports muscle growth and recovery with 21g of protein per serving, while also providing a quick energy boost from MCT oil.
How I would use it:
If you need to supplement with a shake to hit your protein targets, consider taking a scoop of this with 300/400ml of ice cold water, 30 mins post-workout.
For guidance on how to calculate your daily protein intake targets, check out “How much protein do I actually need?” in the articles section.
The Science:
Plant-based protein improves athletic performance and MPS vs. low-/no-protein intake
Study: The Effect of Plant-Based Protein Ingestion on Athletic Ability in Healthy People – A Bayesian Meta-Analysis.
Nutrients (2024)
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39203884
This systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 randomised controlled trials found that plant protein supplementation significantly improved muscle strength, endurance, and MPS compared to no- or low-protein diets. While slightly less effective than animal proteins like whey, plant-based proteins still provide real benefits for training adaptation and recovery in healthy individuals.
A well-balanced vegan diet does not compromise daily mixed muscle protein synthesis
Study: A Well‑Balanced Vegan Diet Does Not Compromise Daily Mixed Muscle Protein Synthesis Rates Compared with an Omnivorous Diet.
Journal of Applied Physiology / ScienceDirect Review
This controlled feeding study demonstrated that when vegans consume a varied, well‐planned plant-based diet with sufficient protein (~1.6 g/kg/day), their muscle protein synthesis rates are equivalent to omnivores during resistance training – confirming that dietary planning with quality plant proteins achieves similar anabolic outcomes.
